Editorial statement
Interest in solar radiation modification (SRM) has grown substantially over the past decade, alongside strong concerns about its potential ecological impacts and the ethical and governance challenges associated with both research and possible deployment. These uncertainties make rigorous, transparent, and coordinated research essential, not to advocate deployment, but to identify and assess its risks, limitations, and potential consequences. In the context of CMIP7 and the forthcoming IPCC AR7, this manuscript represents a major step toward providing the scientific community with robust and comparable evidence on possible SRM outcomes. It will therefore help ensure that future climate assessments and policy discussions are informed by systematic analysis rather than by unresolved assumptions.
Short summary
The Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project is a coordinated international model intercomparison effort aiming to provide robust experimental protocols for simulations of various Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) methods. In this manuscript, we describe a list of novel experiments decided by the community, to be run by climate models to better understand sources of uncertainty in SRM. We also show and discuss some preliminary results from a few climate models.
