Short summary
Operational marine ecosystem forecasts traditionally rely on combining phytoplankton chlorophyll observations with model forecasts. However, using our newly developed ensemble data assimilation system, we demonstrate that assimilating phytoplankton carbon data leads to more balanced phytoplankton estimates and adjusts estimates of global ocean carbon.
