Review of the first revision of the manuscript “Description and
evaluation of the Diat-HadOCC model v1.0: the ocean biogeochemical
component of HadGEM2-ES” by Ian Totterdell, submitted to Geoscientific
Model Development

General remarks

I have read the revised verion of the manuscript thoroughly. Dr.
Totterdell has taken all my main criticisms of the earlier version
into account and I am happy to state that I think the manuscript is
now fit for publication in GMD.

The additional model-data comparisons that I and the other reviewers
have suggested have led to the manuscript now being substantially
longer, but I think that the length of the new manuscript is largely
justified. In fact I think that this manuscript is now a good example
of the level of detail that a good model description and validation
should have. One aspect of the model description is that even somewhat
minor points (such as cutoff temperatures in the calculation of the
Schmidt number) are explicitly described and not glossed over, an
aspect that I find extremely useful. It is those small details that
other biogeochemical modellers - like me - are likely to think over,
and possibly implement.

I only have a few typos to correct (interestingly three of them
clustered on page five), and one or two small comments that the authors
might still take into account.

page 5, line 6: 'nitogen' should be 'nitrogen'.
page 5, line 22: 'pers. comm' should be 'pers. comm.'.
page 5, line 31: 'phytoplntkton' should be 'phytoplankton'.
page 6, line 3: I think 'is' should be 'are'.
page 10, line 7: The name 'Gentleman' is misspelled.
page 12, line 27: Space missing behind the bracketed expression.
page 15, line 20: I think the number 1 should be written out as one.
page 24, line 7: Isn't the 'mean' NPP in reality the integrated?
The mean would have a unit of g C/m^2/yr, wouldn't it?
page 25, line 9: I don't know the word 'Outwith'. Is this my ignorance
or should it be Outside?
page 26, lines 25 ff: I find that puzzling, too. Is there an explanation
for this?
page 30, line 4: The fact that a sine curve is fitted to the data
has already been described before; maybe shorted it here.
page 32, last line: it looks as if the line would have to continue after
the opening bracket. Is there text lost?
page 36, line 6: Too much chlorophyll that does not do enough is a nice way
to summarize this. But one could perhaps speculate here what is happening:
Is the maximum photosynthetic rate too low, or is it perhaps that not
enough of the primary production is grazed (due to the simple zooplankton,
neglecting the grazing by unicellular heterotrophs)?

Short summary

The paper presents a complete description of version 1.0 of the Diat-HadOCC ocean biogeochemical model. A full set of equations is included, as are the parameterisations used and the rationale for choosing them. The model was developed to be a sub-model of the HadGEM2-ES Earth system model, which has been used to run a range of simulations for the 5th Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). Results from those simulations are shown and compared to data (where available).
