Understanding future rainfall is essential for managing floods and water resources in Australia. We tested different ways of helping a regional climate model better represent large-scale weather patterns during the extreme 2010–2011 La Niña event and compared the results with observations. The best approach produced more realistic atmospheric conditions and rainfall, increasing confidence in future climate projections and helping improve information for planning and climate adaptation

We use a comprehensive approach to select a subset of CMIP6 models for dynamical downscaling over Southeast Asia, taking into account model performance, model independence, data availability and the range of future climate projections. The standardised benchmarking framework is applied to assess model performance through both statistical and process-based metrics. Ultimately, we identify two independent model groups that are suitable for dynamical downscaling in the Southeast Asian region.

Climate change is expected to alter how air moves through the upper atmosphere, affecting the distribution of ozone, water vapour, and other important gases. We combined climate model simulations with satellite observations to better understand these changes. Our results show that climate warming mainly speeds up transport in the lower part of the upper atmosphere, providing new evidence that can improve future climate predictions and assessments.

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation strongly affects Australia’s rainfall, but its impacts on Australian extratropical cyclones are difficult to detect. By focusing on days when ENSO-related teleconnection patterns were established, we identified clearer changes in cyclone activity over the Tasman Sea, with more frequent cyclones during La Niña and fewer during El Niño. These results provide new insights into how large-scale climate modes influence regional weather systems.

This study examines how ground-based instruments measure air pollution and how well these measurements match satellite observations over Southeast Asia. We compared two observing methods and found that one captures more detailed short-term changes, while the other provides more stable and representative results. Satellite data improved with newer technology but still showed differences. These findings help improve how scientists interpret satellite data for air quality and climate studies.

Producing reliable regional climate projections requires carefully selecting which global climate models drive them. We developed a transparent and reproducible framework to identify a balanced, representative subset of models for the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment, a major international effort to generate high-resolution climate projections worldwide. While designed for this initiative, the framework is broadly applicable to other models sub-selection efforts.

Climate model performance at the air–sea interface has long been overlooked across the Southeast Asian seas. We thus assess various regional model physics configurations in this regard. Finding one optimal configuration is challenging: reliable rainfall rarely coincides with correct radiative heating. Simulations of rainfall however yield more dissensus, suggesting that this variable should be prioritized, for which the best results are obtained with the cumulus convection scheme of Tiedtke.

This study proposes a selective ensemble method to improve tropical cyclone rainfall forecasts in Vietnam by choosing the best ECMWF members using machine learning and pattern-matching techniques. Applied to Typhoons (2017–2020), the approach, especially using K-means and HAC, outperformed raw ensembles in 70–90 % of cases, with notable gains for 12-hour rainfall forecasts.

This study stands out for thoroughly examining CMIP6 ESMs' ability to simulate biogeochemical variables in the southern South China Sea, an economically important region. It assesses variables like chlorophyll, phytoplankton, nitrate, and oxygen on annual and seasonal scales. While global assessments exist, this study addresses a gap by objectively ranking 13 CMIP6 ocean biogeochemistry models' performance at a regional level, focusing on replicating specific observed biogeochemical variables.

We detail the production of datasets and communication to end users of high-resolution projections of rainfall, runoff, and soil moisture for the entire Australian continent. This is important as previous projections for Australia were for small regions and used differing techniques for their projections, making comparisons difficult across Australia's varied climate zones. The data will be beneficial for research purposes and to aid adaptation to climate change.

As the adverse impacts of hydrological extremes increase in many regions of the world, a better understanding of the drivers of changes in risk and impacts is essential for effective flood and drought risk management. We present a dataset containing data of paired events, i.e. two floods or two droughts that occurred in the same area. The dataset enables comparative analyses and allows detailed context-specific assessments. Additionally, it supports the testing of socio-hydrological models.

A total of 159 cloud water samples were collected and measured for total organic carbon (TOC) during CAMP2Ex. On average, 30 % of TOC was speciated based on carboxylic/sulfonic acids and dimethylamine. Results provide a critical constraint on cloud composition and vertical profiles of TOC and organic species ranging from ~250 m to ~ 7 km and representing a variety of cloud types and air mass source influences such as biomass burning, marine emissions, anthropogenic activity, and dust.

Short summary
We present an ensemble of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6)-downscaled regional climate model simulations for Southeast Asia (1960–2100). We (1) evaluate model performance against multiple observational datasets and (2) apply a standardized benchmarking framework to identify high-performing models for further kilometer-scale dynamical downscaling over Southeast Asian megacities. This effort supports the development and use of reliable regional climate projections.
