We developed a new global ocean model to understand how mercury moves and changes in seawater. The model closely matches observed mercury patterns, providing confidence in its results. It will serve as the ocean part of a fully coupled Earth system mercury model (CESM2-Hg) with air, land, and river processes, improving predictions of future mercury pollution and guiding strategies to protect marine life and human health.
